Financing a Luther Education
Every year, Luther awards a significant amount of financial aid to entering international students. Funds are awarded for full-time study during the nine-month academic year on the basis of academic merit and family financial need. A typical academic award usually combines scholarships and grant money (which does not have to be repaid) with on-campus work.
Luther College's funds for international students are not limitless, however. In general, students should expect to pay for a portion (up to one half or more) of their own educational expenses through family funds and/or aid programs offered through local or national churches, government agencies, and cultural organizations.
To apply for financial aid as an international student, you must submit a completed, signed, and verified International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA) (application.pdf), indicating your ability to finance your travel to and study at Luther College.
In addition to the ISFAA, you should submit certified bank statements, parental wage statements, or other documents that provide evidence of your ability to finance a portion of the costs related to your studies. You must also submit the application for admission and other documents as outlined at www.luther.edu/admissions/international/process/.

Costs and Financial Assistance
Ultimately, your college decision should incorporate a variety of factors. We understand that the cost of an education is an important factor for most students. The comprehensive fee at Gustavus Adolphus College for the 2009-2010 academic year is $40,010. This figure includes tuition ($31,460), room ($5,000), meals ($2,900) and fees for orientation, transcripts, wellness, and student government ($650). We estimate an additional cost of $900 for books and supplies, $700 for health insurance, and $910 in personal expenses. Travel costs vary greatly.
Gustavus has good scholarships and student employment for international students. The primary purpose of our financial aid program at Gustavus is to provide financial aid to students who, without such aid, would be unable to attend Gustavus. When family resources do not meet our costs, we strive fill in the gap with financial aid. But even with our most significant scholarship award and student employment, you and your family or sponsor will need to contribute much of the cost of your education.
For those who are able to fund an education here, we believe that a Gustavus education is a wise investment. While you should choose the college that fits you best, there are real differences in quality – from important statistical differences like class size and graduation rates to more intangible differences like faculty contact and college character.
The four-year graduation rate at Gustavus is 80%. Other four-year graduation rates are: 17% (national average), 21% (Minnesota State Colleges and Universities), 30% (University of Minnesota), 34% (all U.S. private colleges), and 61% (Minnesota private colleges).
Our average class size is 15. Student to faculty ratio is 12:1. Zero classes are taught by teaching assistants. 50% of students have internships and 60% study abroad.
With our full-service Career Center and the distinctive Center for Vocational Reflection, recent Gustavus graduates are winning competitive jobs and admission to top graduate schools. Our average placement within six months of graduation is 98%.
Our freshman-to-sophomore retention rate is above 90%. Not only does this demonstrate that Gustavus turns out to be a great fit for most students but also that the College remains financially accessible year after year.

Undergrad: Murdoch International Discoverers’ Scholarship Scheme up to A$5,500/yr, Australia
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 — Australia’s Murdoch University will start offering scholarships of up to A$5,500 (RM16,797) for eligible students next year, to pre-empt a possible drop in foreign enrolments due to rising academic costs Down Under.
Since 2003, the Australian dollar has climbed steadily against the ringgit, gaining as much as 13 per cent at the current RM2.81. At the same time, the UK — another favoured destination of Malaysian students — has seen the sterling pound slide from RM6.20 then to present RM4.88.
The university’s senior deputy vice chancellor Gary Martin said the new Murdoch International Discoverers’ Scholarship Scheme is part of its internationalisation programme and will apply to a wide range of Murdoch courses at the undergraduate level.
He said the partial scholarships were only available to students who applied for entry to Murdoch University for commencement in 2011 and that the scholarships would be used to offset the annual published course fees for the duration of the degrees.
“Under the scheme, all students who meet university entry requirements and are made an offer by the university will automatically be awarded the part tuition fee scholarship,” Martin said in a statement.
“Depending on the course selected, the scheme allowed for a reduction in annual course fees by between A$500 and A$5500,” he added.
Martin added that the Murdoch International Discoverers’ Scholarship Scheme was one of a number of initiatives that the University had developed to enhance international students’ experiences at Murdoch.
“We have also introduced a dedicated 24/7 Student Support telephone service, the first in Australia, so that international students can be reassured that whatever the time of day or night, they can contact somebody if there is a need,” he said.
Among other facilities in the campus will be the new Student Centre where students can seek advice on courses offered and visa-related matters.
