The Hitachi Scholarship Foundation yearly invites Ph.D. holding faculty members to participate in conducting research in the fields of science and technology at Japanese universities or research institutes. This fellowship will cover: Airfare: Economy class roundtrip airfare Maintenance allowance: ¥270,000 per month, Research travel allowance: ¥100,000, Research allowance: ¥40,000, Housing allowance: ¥100,000 (maximum per month)

Description
The Foundation provides Ph.D. holding faculty members with opportunities to enhance their academic credentials by visiting research collaborators in Japan to conduct research in the fields of science and technology at Japanese universities or research institutes. There are short term programs (less than three months) and long term programs (six to twelve months) available,depending on their needs.

Eligibility for the program is limited to faculty members up to the age of 45 who hold a doctoral degree in the fields of science and technology and who have been recommended by a senior staff at their university.

Eligibility

2. Have been nominated by their university’s presidential office, with the approval and recommendation of the faculty and the department.
3. Have received a specific and confirmed invitation from a professor at a Japanese university, who will act as the host professor to collaborate with and/or advise the applicant until graduation or the completion of the program.

• Applicants to all programs must be faculty members at one of the eligible universities.
• English will be the common language used in most of the international conferences. Therefore,we strongly suggest that applicants have a good knowledge of English as a communication tool. A TOEFL score of 530 or above is preferred.
• The Foundation shall mail application forms every year in June to the presidential office of each university.
• Each applicant shall submit the application to his/her university’s presidential office with all requested information. The Foundation will accept applications and nomination letters from the presidential offices until the end of October. No direct application from individual will be accepted.
• The application form should be supplemented with a recommendation letter from the Head of Department and/or the Dean of Faculty, along with a confirmed certificate of acceptance from a Japanese host professor (Scholarship) or advisory professor/research counterpart (Research/Komai Fellowship).
• The selection committee of the Foundation initially screens applications received and identifies candidates to interview.
• Interviews with candidates shall be carried out individually, usually at candidates’ home universities, during the period from December to March.
• One of the most important points for evaluation is why the university has nominated the candidate and what kind of scenario the department or faculty has for the candidate in terms of academic collaboration after graduation. If the applicant’s department or faculty has been implementing specific cooperation/collaboration with the laboratory of the proposed host professor in Japan, this will receive positive consideration in the screening of the candidate.
• Following the interview, the Foundation may contact both senior advisors at the home university and the proposed host professor in Japan for further verification.
• Notification of final decisions will be made to the presidential offices, and award notices will be sent to each successful candidate in June.

The Komai Fellowship Sponsored by the Hitachi Scholarship Foundation, Japan

The Hitachi Scholarship Foundation in Japan now offers Komai Fellowship for faculty members of one of the eligible universities to individual or joint research with their Japanese counterparts, on topics either wholly or substantially related to Japan. The Fellowship will cover Economy class round trip airfare, maintainance allowance (¥15,000 per day) and Research travel allowance (up to ¥100,000)

Description
The Komai Fellowship Program was inaugurated under the auspices of the late Kenichiro Komai, the first chairman of the Hitachi Scholarship Foundation, to encourage academic interaction between Southeast Asian countries and Japan in the fields of social and cultural science.

Faculty members specializing in social science or humanities at Southeast Asian universities who wish to conduct individual or joint research with their Japanese counterparts, on topics either wholly or substantially related to Japan, may apply for the program.

2013/2014 PILnet Fellowship for Public Interest Lawyers, USA

PILnet: The Global Network for Public Interest Law is pleased to invite applications for the PILnet Fellowship for 2013-2014. The fellows will participate in study visits to various cities in the U.S. and Europe, as well as two-month internships at New York-based public interest law organizations. PILnet will cover the cost of a round-trip coach airfare to the U.S., housing in New York City, a monthly stipend, and emergency medical insurance. Selected candidates for the Fellowship are required to sign an agreement to the terms of the program, stating that they will complete it in full.

Description
PILnet: The Global Network for Public Interest Law is pleased to invite applications for the PILnet Fellowship for 2013-2014. PILnet will select lawyers from Brazil, China, the Middle East and North Africa region (especially Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, and Tunisia), Nepal, Nigeria, Russia, and Southeast Asia (especially Indonesia, Cambodia, and Vietnam) for eight months of study and practical experience in New York City. The program, now in its sixteenth year, targets future leaders in various fields of public interest advocacy.

During their eight months in the U.S., PILnet Fellows will develop a project designed to further the rule of law in their home countries. The Fellowship begins with a semester of study at Columbia University School of Law and a series of professional development trainings. In the spring, the PILnet Fellows will participate in study visits to various cities in the U.S. and Europe, as well as two-month internships at New York-based public interest law organizations. At the end of the program, the Fellows will return to their home countries ready to implement the rule of law projects they developed during their Fellowships.

Eligibility
Candidate should originate from the following countries:

• Brazil, China, the Middle East and North Africa region, Nepal, Nigeria, Russia, and Southeast Asia
• For the Middle East and North Africa region, special consideration will be given to candidates in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia
• For Southeast Asia, special consideration will be given to candidates from Indonesia, Cambodia, and Vietnam

Application Procedure

• The application process begins with a call for applications, which outlines selection criteria and encourages public interest lawyers from a number of countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa to apply before the March deadline. Nominating NGOs in the applicants’ home countries submit letters of support to ensure that Fellows will have a platform from which to implement their projects when they return home at the end of the fellowship. The review process of applications begins with a panel of former PILnet Fellows assessing a select number of candidates. These reviews are based off of carefully constructed criteria, which allow for objective identification of the most qualified applicants. The selection committee then makes its final decisions, and successful applicants receive their fellowship invitations in June.

2013 Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund, USA

Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund is now available for students working for social change and actively working for peace and justice.

Description
The recipients of the scholarship should work for civil rights, against McCarthyism, and for peace in Vietnam. Recent grantees have been active in the struggle against racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression; building the movement for economic justice; and creating peace through international anti-imperialist solidarity

Benefits: The maximum grant is $10,000 and may be considerably smaller depending on the applicant’s circumstances and the amount of funding available.

Eligibility
This scholarship is targeted to students who able to do academic work at the university level and who are part of the progressive movement on the campus and in the community. In addition applicants must active to participate in struggles for civil rights, economic justice, international solidarity or other progressive issues.
The Davis-Putter scholars are also both graduate and undergraduate students and must be enrolled in an accredited school and receiving college credit for the time period covered by their grant.

Application Procedure
The application must include a short personal statement, transcripts, letters of support from two people able to evaluate the applicant’s current political work, an official financial statement (i.e., FAFSA or SAR), and a passport-like photograph suitable for reproduction.

Global Research Alliance Borlaug Fellowships, A Reseach Fellowship in Climate Change, USA

The 3 months research on climate change mitigation is sponsored by The United States Department of  Agriculture. The applicants are expected from Colombia, Ghana, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Philippines and Vietnam.
Description
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is now accepting applications for 2013 Global Research Alliance Borlaug Fellowships under the auspices of the Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellowship Program. Fellows will be selected from eight developing countries that are members of the Global Research Alliance (GRA) on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases. Fellows will work with a mentor at USDA’s Agricultural Research Service or a U.S. university for up to 3 months on climate change mitigation research. The mentor will later travel to the fellow’s home country for up to 10 days to continue collaboration.

Eligibility

• Be citizens of an eligible country
• Be fluent in English
• Have completed a Master’s or higher degree
• Be in the early or middle stage of their career, with at least two years of practical experience
• Be employed by a university, government agency or research entity in their home country
• Demonstrate their intention to continue working in their home country after completing the fellowship.
