Elephants can’t snatch our ticket to S’Africa –Eagles

CHAN 2014: Battle of Abidjan |
Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles have vowed to put their flesh on the grill to stop the Elephants of Ivory Coast from turning the table, when both teams clash tonight in the decisive leg of the final qualifying fixture for next year’s Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), meant for players plying their trade in the continent’s domestic leagues.
The Nigerian team goes into tonight’s crunchy tie inside the main bowl of the Houphet Boigney Stadium in the city of Abidjan, with 4-1 advantage from the first leg played at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna three weeks ago.
Insinuations were rife that the Nigerian team should expect everything but not hospitality from the Ivorians, given the undisciplined way and manner the Ivorians conducted themselves in the first leg encounter in Kaduna. The team shunned post match Press Conference, apparently to register its anger over the red cards to two of its players.
But defenders, Godfrey Oboabona and Chibuzor Okonkwo had not only vowed to make things difficult for the Elephants tonight, but also declared the Super Eagles’ readiness for anything the Ivorians throw at them.
“We are prepared for war! Whatever they (Ivorians) come with, we are ready for them. Nothing can stop us from going to South Africa next year for the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN)” Enugu Rangers defence ace, Chibuzor Okonkwo vowed in Lagos before the Eagles jetted out to Abidjan.
“We cannot afford not to qualify for the CHAN tournament this time round after missing out in the first two editions of the championship. This is why we are prepared for whatever the Ivorians will throw at us. If it means that we have to spill our blood, we are prepared to do it” the Beijing 2008 Olympics silver medalist added.
Corroborating his teammate, Sunshine Stars Captain, Godfrey Oboabona in a separate chat with Saturday Sunsports said: “We’re aware of what is at stake. The Ivorians need to win 3-0 to stop us from going to South Africa next year but we will make things difficult for them in Abidjan. Our target is to score them first and that way, we would have nailed their coffin.”
Super Eagles’ Coach, Stephen Keshi, who looks to make history as the first coach to qualify Nigeria for the CHAN competition had earlier warned his charges to prepare for war in Abidjan. The former Nigerian captain, who once played professional football in the French-speaking West African nation advised his boys not to get carried away by the 4-1 first leg scores, as today’s return leg is as important as the first leg.

Father Sells Family Land To Settle Son’s Accuser

It was a sober moment at the Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court, after a complainant, Mr. Emmanuel Ejike, admitted collecting N8m from the father of an accused as settlement.
The father of the accused was said to have sold his family land to raise the N8m to rescue his son, Onyeka Nsofor, who was said to have, in company with seven others, stolen N15m from Ejike.
It was alleged that the N8m was collected by Ejike with the understanding that Nsofor would be set free by the police. But the complainant told the court that the N8m was a far cry from the N15m stolen from him.
The complainant, who sells shoes at Balogun Market in Lagos, told the court that he hailed from the same area in Nnewi, Anambra State with Nsofor.
“I collected N8m from him and it is not up to what his son stole from me,” he said after one of the lawyers told him that he did not tell the police the whole truth.
But the revelation came as a shock because the police denied knowing anything about the payment.
The police had charged seven people to court for the theft of the N15m which Ejike said was stolen from his warehouse in Balogun Market.
In his evidence before the court, he said, “Nsofor’s father begged me to let him follow me to Lagos so he could be helping me at my warehouse.
“I sell shoes in my warehouse, while I also supply my wife who sells in the showroom. We sell up to 100 to 150 cartons in a day and make up to N1m or N2m.
“The theft, which occurred between September 2010 and September 2011, was made possible because during this period, I had stopped my auditors from working and didn’t know such a thing had happened.
“It was after I called Ejike, and spoke to him in my room that he confessed to me that, together with three of my employees, he had been stealing 10 cartons of my shoes every week.
“I collected his ATM card and I saw N1.2m in his account. As I was about to get him arrested, he ran away and I did not want to arrest his father for his son’s crime.”
The defendants’ counsel, however, said, “I want you to tell this court, how much you collected from the old man(Onyeka’s father) before deciding to ask the police to leave his son?”
At this point, he said he had collected N8m, which was the proceed of the family land sold by the defendant’s father.
The matter was adjourned till September 23.
We Won’t Legalise Same-Sex Marriage, Minister Insists

The minister was reacting to an accusation by the Christian Association of Nigeria, based on a statement credited to him, where he was alleged to have said Nigeria would accept gay diplomats and their “spouses”, if posted to the country.
In a statement made available to our correspondent on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said at no time did Ashiru make reference to gay diplomats in any of his statements or interviews.
The statement read, “The attention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been drawn to stories on gay rights issues and Nigeria’s position on the matter.
“At his meeting with the diplomatic community on Friday July 19, the Foreign Affairs Minister, in his statement read to the meeting, where journalists and media executives were present, said foreign countries should not impose their values on Nigeria.
“While Nigeria is not against any country legalising gay marriages, no country should force that on Nigeria. Nigeria and majority of Nigerians are against gay rights and marriages, as they are not part of our customs, religion or law. At no time did the minister make reference to gay diplomats in his statement or interview.”
Commenting on gay rights, Ashiru had said at the meeting with foreign diplomats, “We don’t tell other countries how to live their lives. We don’t impose values on any country. Other countries too should not impose their own values on us. We don’t oppose any country that has put in their constitution the gay rights to allow two men or two women to marry themselves. But for Nigeria and a number of other African countries, it is not part of our culture yet.”

Kalu wants more books on civil war
Former Abia State governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, yesterday called on civil war veterans to put their experience in writing in order to fast-track the process of national reconciliation.
Kalu said: “Truth and time play a role in the healing process. From Brig. Godwin Alabi -Isama’s account, we now know that friendship indeed existed across the battle field. Once again, Gen Alani Akinrinade has come out clean as a hero. And we can also learn to forgive, since Alabi-Isama and Akinrinade are crying for ailing Brig. Benjamin Adekunle, their Commander, who allegedly planned to assassinate them in Asa.”
In a statement issued by his aide, Mr Emeka Obasi, the ex-governor urged other participants like Generals Akinrinade, Ibrahim Babangida, Muhammadu Buhari, Conrad Nwawo, Ben Nwajei, Inua Wushishi, Lambert Ihenacho, Mohammed Magoro, Gado Nasko, Sunny Tuoyo and Cols. Chris Ugokwe, Sanni Bello, Emeka Ananaba and Yemi Alabi to boost the library with their accounts.
“Babangida held on to Uzuakoli even with bullet wounds, the same town where Ananaba operated as Eighth Commando Brigade Commander. Babangida, Ted Hamman, Ozoemena Igweze, Mamman Vatsa and Garba Duba joined the army same day in December 1962 and were active during the crisis. Buhari and Ugokwe joined same day too, but eight months earlier, perhaps he (Buhari) should let us know why General Olusegun Obasanjo referred to him as “a field commissioned officer,” Kalu added.
With his American background, Kalu believes that Alabi’s account could do justice to his course mates like William Walbe, Isah Bukar, I.T. Atumaka, Ganiyu Adeleke, Akpan Utuk and Pam Mwadkon.
“Of course, there are stories to tell from the horses mouth. Alabi is still very much around. His war tales will make good reading for the sake of posterity. Just like it would be nice to read Nasko’s mind when he fired the first artillery shot. Not many remember that Magoro suffered mortar injury in Nsukka , the same sector where Wushishi’s 21 Battalion operated at the time Gen. Emeka Ojukwu’s half –brother, Tom Bigger and Chukwuma Nzeogwu died,” he said.
Kalu commended earlier authors like Frederick Foresythe, Obasanjo, Achike Udenwa, Gen. Alex Madiebo, Sasa Nwoke and Austin Okpe for their works, while urging government to upgrade the Umuahia War Museum to a parastatal.
Sportlight Underage Marriage in Africa And Its Victim
Many Islamic and semi-Islamic African countries are trying to make underage marriage legal, just like in Nigeria where debates are ranging about child marriage.
A Zimbabwen child bride who is now a scholar speaks on this topic
According to her, she was bound to follow in the footsteps of generations of women before her; early marriage, illiteracy and poverty. "most kids in my village never had a chance to attend pre-school because it didn't exist. Instead, we would spend hours chasing birds and monkeys from our parents' field" she concludes.
Why is underage marriage an issue? Why are many African countries legalizing child marriage?
Supporters of underage marriage , are hinging their argument on religion, Islamic religion in particular, they argue that a girl is a woman when she gets married no matter the age. They even go further to pose this question to anti-child marriage supporters "underage marriage and gay marriage which is better?"
Some Disadvantages of Underage Marriage
Many of us know some of the disadvantages of child marriage, but for the benefits of some let me point them out:* A child that marries before reaching 18years is bound to experience a life of mistry.
* Her inexperience may lead to provoking the husband which can result to beating.
* As a child who is forced to be an adult she is bound to make mistakes, which she'll later regret.
* Underage marriage leads to frustration, mistry and despair, when that happens to a 14-17 year old well she may commit suicide
A good a example is what happened in Jos Nigeria where a 17 year old girl cut and stabed her husband to death with a knife, reason? When asked by Radio Nigeria one of Africa's top Radio Station the girl said "I don't like how he disturbs me at night, whenever we're in bed"
You see a child is still a child, you can force the horse to stream but you can't force it to drink from the stream, likewise you can force an underage to marry but you can't change the fact that she is underage, as a result she reasons like a child. To her killing her husband is a play thing and the best way to end the problem.
What ever African lawmakers are doing let them be real! Make laws that can help Africa grow.
Nigeria's Tonto Dike Vs Iyanya are we witnessing another Nollywood and Music War

One of Nigeria's controvasial actress cum muscian Tonto Dike is at it again. The last time she was in the news it was her and another top Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson. Reason? Something as trivial as marriage! Tonto by means of twitter a popular social media network, launched an attack against Mercy. In her words "'Nollywood Bridez marry horribly** #SHEBA#…Wen n if I give birth,God plz provide mii wit a husband dat can provide 4uz, Not 1 dat wld send mii bck to actin 2monthz after I born 2Huzzle".
Mercy replied back "Good morning sweets, hope y'all good? Off to work. Mama Purity loves y'all loads. have a blessed day filled with love" by tweeting that Mercy showed a rare form of maturity. She's indirectly telling Tonto to mind her own businness.

Iyanya the kukure master as his friends and fans call him is now fighting a war of words with Tonto Dike reason? Iyanya in an interview confessed that he can die for Yvonne Nelson dust off Tonto Dike and have dinner with Genevieve. Tonto replied via her usual platform twitter "lol Nigger sound pained Y"#SHEBA#."
This latest development is not good for Nigeria's growing entertainment industry, where music artist, Nollywood actors and actress lead by Tonto are engaged in war of words, even footballers are not left behind as seen with Osaze and Keshi. This is done all in the name of "dissing" as coined by Ruggedman and Idris back in the days.Is high time Tonto Dike, Mercy Johnson, Iyanya and co stop this and behave like adults because some Nigerians are looking up to them. Stop this twitter war!
Cosmetics, Abortion Trigger Cancer –Experts

Head, Oncology and Radiotherapy Department, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Remi Ajekigbe, said breast cancer is on the increase due to lack of awareness about the disease among women and poor diet.
“Awareness is a major factor responsible for the increase in breast cancer cases. A lot of women are not educated on the disease, so even when the signs and symptoms are present, they can hardly notice them. Awareness campaign on the disease will help early detection and treatment,” Ajekigbe said, adding that population increase could be responsible for the wide spread of the disease.
“Twenty years ago, Nigeria population’s was not what it is today; population increase could increase the spread of diseases including breast cancer.
“Increased population could affect the social life of the people. The social factor is crucial because we tend to imbibe a number of habits that are detrimental to our health. For instance, smoking and poor diet are factors that have increased the cases of breast cancer. We eat a lot of chemicals, especially our younger ones. Those processed junks are not good for health. Its accumulation over a period of time could lead to various types of cancer. Cosmetics used to enhance beauty also have concentrated chemicals that could become cancerous when they enter the body system. Skin beauty products make women look good and attractive but they could have negative effect later in life. Perfumes also could increase the risk as some of them are also cancerous,” Ajekigbe said.
The oncologist also explained that the facilities available for the treatment of the disease are not adequate, pointing out that epileptic supply of electricity in the country contribute to the high cost of treatment of the disease. Speaking further on the disease, Ajekigbe said early detection reduced difficulties experienced in its treatment.
“A lot of prominent people died of breast cancer because it was'nt detected at the advanced stage. Self breast examination is the key to early detection of the disease. Every woman should understand the simple test to detect cancer in the breasts,” he advised.
Another cancer specialist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Dr. Abiodun Popoola, said abortion in the first three months of pregnancy increased a woman’s risk of having breast cancer.
“Towards the end of the first trimester, the hormone balance in the woman’s body changes, the oestrogen levels drop and the levels of others rise. Differentiation and maturation begins and continues until the child is born.
“But when an abortion occurs at the early stages, this process is suddenly cut short and this greatly increases the risk of that woman or lady having breast cancer. Sadly, 90 per cent of abortions are done at this stage. It however varies in different women,” he said.
When our correspondent visited some breast cancer clinics in Lagos State, patients narrated tales of pains and frustration. Mrs. Kehinde Olabisi, who is battling with the disease, told our correspondent who was with her during one of her chemotherapy sessions at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, that she would have committed suicide but for her husband support. Olabisi who is in her early 40s said she was diagnosed with the disease in 2011, lamenting the loss of one of her breasts and inability to function fully as a wife.
Olabisi said, “You do not want to imagine the psychological trauma of living with just one breast. A lot of women would prefer to die with the cancer than to lose a breast. But since losing a breast was the only way to save my life, I had to accept it. I have been battling with this illness since 2011, I removed the lumps first to delay cutting off the breast but it did not work so they removed it three months ago. I have not recovered from the experience.
“Breast cancer is a dangerous disease affecting women because it drains them physically, financially, psychologically and emotionally. You no longer feel good about yourself it is like you have no self worth anymore,” a tearful Olabisi said.
Olabisi, who was in the hospital with her husband, added that the doctors warned that chemotherapy treatment after surgery was crucial to full recovery.
“Chemotherapy is a difficult process that involves endurance. It would scrape off all the hair on the victim’s body. After my first experience, I woke up and saw my hair falling off on the pillow. It took away my appetite and I became allergic to perfume. I had sores on my body and this is how I feel every time. But I thank God for my husband who has stood by me. I could not have got this far without him.”
But the road to recovery has been a demanding one. To pay the bill, Olabisi and her husband sold a house and took N4m bank loan to pay for treatment.
She said, “Victims of breast cancer need love to pull through. They need people around them all the time. Absence of these factors could lead to death.”
A survivor who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity said the rate of survival could only be improved upon if all women did constant self-check, adding that she was saved because she detected the lump early.
She said, “I was 54-year-old when I discovered I had breast cancer. I was having my bath when I noticed the lump. I was not too sure what it was so I went to a doctor and they told me it was cancerous. That was the beginning of the battle.
“I started treatment in a hospital in Abeokuta and when it was beyond the hospital’s ability, I travelled to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State, where doctors told me that what saved me was early detection. It was an eye opener in my home. Because of my case, my sister and her sister in-law went for screening and realised they had lumps and they sought treatment immediately, they all survived the deadly disease. I advise all the women who are suffering from breast cancer not to give up. They should trust in God for their treatment. The government should also help by subsidising the cost of treatment. It is too expensive.”
Also, Mrs. Nimota Odukoya, another breast cancer patient, said the cost of treatment scared many victims.
She said, “Only victims with enough financial strength to treat breast cancer survive. If you have breast cancer and you cannot pay for test, drugs or your chemotherapy, then you may not survive. It is the cost of treatment that is leading to the death of many patients. When you are told that you need N500,000 to start treatment and you have just N20,000, you have no option than to go back home, especially if you don’t have property to sell.
“I have spent about N2 million treating the disease . I pay N45,000 every three weeks for chemotherapy, and N20,000 on drugs per week. A lot of women who started treatment died along the way because they could not afford the cost.
“Government should help sufferers by subsidising the cost of cancer treatment. Government is campaigning for women to go for breast cancer screening in hospitals, but when you actually have it, the amount needed to treat it is unaffordable for 80 per cent of Nigerians,” she said.
Okagbare Sets New African 100m Record

But Okagbare was not done yet as she put up another heroic performance in the final to break the African record she had set earlier in the heats to win in a time of 10.7secs ahead of second–placed Barbara Pierre of the United States – who clocked a joint personal best time of 10.85sec- and Trinidad’s Kelly-Ann Baptiste (third in 10.93secs).
After running a world leading 10.7 secs in the semi-finals, defending world champion and reigning Olympic 100m gold medalist, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, never recovered from a poor start in the final, finishing fourth in 10.94secs.
Okagbare has been in fantastic form recently, with the London feat her second Diamond League victory.
The 24-year-old Nigerian jumped 7.04m to win the women’s long jump event at the IAAF Diamond League Grand Prix event in Monaco and record her season’s personal best in the event.
She also won the women’s long jump at the IAAF Diamond League Grand Prix in Lausanne in a remarkable 6.98m. In the sprints, Okagbare defeated rivals Fraser-Pryce and Carmelita Jeter to win the 200m at the Birmingham Grand Prix.
The USA-based athlete is being tipped to end Nigeria’s 13-year medal drought at the World Athletics Championships, scheduled for Russia in August. And she hopes to be in top form ahead of the showpiece.
“I just wanted to put up a good race and I’m so excited. For me, I just want to do my best and I’ve been working hard and have tried to stay on top of my recovery. I’m hoping when it comes to Moscow that I’ll be ready,” the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games long jump bronze medalist told the BBC.
I’m Happy We Qualified For 2014 CHAN, Says Keshi
The team had gone into the second leg match with a 4-1 advantage, having outclassed the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire on June 6 in Kaduna. Keshi said in Abidjan shortly after the match that the game, though an interesting one, took Eagles about 25 minutes to get composure. “ I must say that it was a good game.
We played an Ivorian side that is quite good, my team was a little jittery at the beginning.’’ An elated Keshi added that CHAN would provide good exposure for the team: “I am sure that my team will garner more experience by the time they play in South Africa.’’
The Ivorian Coach, Saraka Nobert, said at the post-match news conference that his team did well. “It was not a bad play at all, we tried so hard to get a third goal but the chances were not there, I think my team did not play badly.’’ Zougoula Ahmed scored the two goals in the sixth minute before converting a penalty in 26th minute of the match played at the Robert Champoux Stadium, Macory, Abidjan.
The home-based Eagles will be playing in the championship for the first time since the start of the competition in 2009. The 3rd edition of CHAN was originally scheduled for Libya but will now hold in South Africa.
The three un-replied goals would have robbed the Eagles of the opportunity to play in the tournament. Mike Umeh, Vice President of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) said that he was impressed with the result. “It means we are going to South Africa. It will be a good exposure for our team. The result of this match is a good one for us.’
HOW TO MAKE MONEY RE-PACKING HARDWOOD CHARCOAL FOR THE EXPORT MARKET.
Charcoal is the blackish residue consisting of impure carbon obtained by removing water and other volatile constituents from animal and vegetation substances. Charcoal is usually produced by slow pyrolysis, the heating of wood, sugar, bone char, or other substances in the absence of oxygen (see pyrolysis, char and biochar). The resulting soft, brittle, lightweight, black, porous material resembles coal and is 85% to 98% carbon with the remainder consisting of volatile chemicals and ash.
Types of Charcoal:
Commercial charcoal is found in either lump, briquette, or extruded forms:• Lump charcoal is made directly from hardwood material and usually produces far less ash than briquettes.
• Briquettes are made by compressing charcoal, typically made from sawdust and other wood by-products, with a binder and other additives. The binder is usually starch. Some briquettes may also include brown coal (heat source), mineral carbon (heat source), borax, sodium nitrate (ignition aid), limestone (ash-whitening agent), raw sawdust (ignition aid), and other additives like paraffin or petroleum solvents to aid in ignition.

• Extruded charcoal is made by extruding either raw ground wood or carbonized wood into logs without the use of a binder. The heat and pressure of the extruding process hold the charcoal together. If the extrusion is made from raw wood material, the extruded logs are then subsequently carbonized. The characteristics of charcoal products (lump, briquette, or extruded forms) vary widely from product to product. Thus it is a common misconception to stereotype any kind of charcoal, saying which burns hotter, etc.
Charcoal is sometimes used to power commercial road vehicles—usually buses—in countries where oil is scarce or completely unavailable. In the years immediately after the Second World War, charcoal buses were in regular use in Japan and are still used today in North Korea
Uses:
An application of wood charcoal was as a constituent of gunpowder. It was also used in metallurgical operations as a reducing agent, but its application has been diminished by the introduction of coke, anthracite smalls, etc. For example, charcoal may be used to smelt a variety of metals from aluminum to copper as it burns at the necessary temperature: 1,100 °C (2,010 °F).[4] A limited quantity is made up into the form of drawing crayons; but the greatest amount is used as a fuel, which burns hotter and cleaner than wood. Charcoal is often used by blacksmiths, for cooking, and for other industrial applications.
Cooking fuel:Charcoal briquettes are widely used for outdoor grilling and barbecue in backyards and on camping trips. In many non-industrialized countries, charcoal is used for everyday cooking by a large portion of the population. This is potentially a serious health problem when used indoors since carbon monoxide (CO) is a combustion product.Industrial fuel
A charcoal powered bus being "fired up" in post war Japan (late 1940s)Historically, charcoal was used in great quantities for smelting iron in bloomeries and later blast furnaces and finery forges. This use was replaced by coke during the Industrial Revolution. For this purpose, charcoal in England was measured in dozens (or loads) consisting of 12 sacks or shems or seams, each of 8 bushels.
Automotive fuel:In times of scarce petroleum, automobiles and even buses have been converted to burn wood gas (gas mixture containing primarily carbon monoxide) released by burning charcoal or wood in a wood gas generator. In 1931 Tang Zhongming developed an automobile powered by charcoal, and these cars were popular in China until the 1950s. In occupied France during World War II, wood and wood charcoal production for such vehicles (called gazogènes) increased from pre-war figures of approximately fifty thousand tons a year to almost half a million tons in 1943.
Purification/Filtration :Charcoal may be activated to increase its effectiveness as a filter. Activated charcoal readily adsorbs a wide range of organic compounds dissolved or suspended in gases and liquids. Charcoal is often used to filter water to remove bacteria and undesired tastes. In certain industrial process, such as the purification of sucrose from cane sugar, impurities cause an undesirable color, which can be removed with activated charcoal. It is also used to absorb odors and toxins in gasses, such as air. One striking example is the use of charcoal to remove the smell of maraijuana plants in small-scale residential settings. Charcoal filters are also used in some types of gas masks. The medical use of activated charcoal is mainly the adsorption of poisons, especially in the case of suicide attempts in which the patient has ingested a large amount of a drug. Activated charcoal is available without a prescription, so it is used for a variety of health-related applications. For example, it is often used to reduce discomfort (and embarrassment) due to excessive gas in the digestive tract.Animal charcoal or bone black is the carbonaceous residue obtained by the dry distillation of bones. It contains only about 10% carbon, the remainder being calcium and magnesium phosphates (80%) and other inorganic material originally present in the bones. It is generally manufactured from the residues obtained in the glue and gelatin industries. Its decolorizing power was applied in 1812 by Derosne to the clarification of the syrups obtained in sugar refining; but its use in this direction has now greatly diminished, owing to the introduction of more active and easily managed reagents. It is still used to some extent in laboratory practice. The decolorizing power is not permanent, becoming lost after using for some time; it may be revived, however, by washing and reheating. Wood charcoal also to some extent removes coloring material from solutions, but animal charcoal is generally more effective.
Art:Charcoal is used in art for drawing, making rough sketches in painting and is one of the possible media for making a parsemage. It must usually be preserved by the application of a fixative. Artists generally utilize charcoal in three forms:
• Vine charcoal is created by burning sticks of wood (usually willow or linden/Tilia) into soft, medium, and hard consistencies.
• Compressed charcoal charcoal powder mixed with gum binder compressed into round or square sticks. The amount of binder determines the hardness of the stick. Compressed charcoal is used in charcoal pencils.
• Powdered charcoal is often used to "tone" or cover large sections of a drawing surface. Drawing over the toned areas will darken it further, but the artist can also lighten (or completely erase) within the toned area to create lighter tones.
Horticulture:One additional use of charcoal rediscovered recently is in horticulture. Although American gardeners have been using charcoal for a short while, research on Terra preta soils in the Amazon has found the widespread use of biochar by pre-Columbian natives to turn otherwise unproductive soil into very rich soil. The technique may find modern application, both to improve soils and as a means of carbon sequestration.
Medicine:Charcoal was consumed in the past as dietary supplement for gastric problems in the form of charcoal biscuits. Now it can be consumed in tablet, capsule or powder form, for digestive benefits. Charcoal absorbs gases and toxins to help heartburn, flatulence or indigestion
Smoking:Special charcoals are used in the smoking of the Hookah. Lit coals are placed on top of foil, which is placed over the bowl of tobacco, and through indirect heat "cook" the tobacco to a temperature that produces smoke, but does not burn.

Heartless Mum Sells Baby

The housewife also fled her matrimonial home with the other four children in March and returned four months after, precisely on July 5, 2013, with the four kids, but without the pregnancy of their fifth child.
It was learnt that the inability of Njideka to explain what happened to their baby led the husband to lodge a complaint against her at the Orlu police station.
While confirming the development, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Katsina told Saturday Sun that ,” I have to send my ‘Police Ambush Squad’ to arrest Njideka Okorie and she confessed that she delivered the baby on June 27, 2013 but that she sold it for N100,000 to one Agatha Okoronkwo .
She said the child is a female and was sold when she was three weeks old.”The police boss stated that the police detectives travelled to Isieka Ihiala in Anambra State to arrest the suspect, Agatha Okoronkwo , a civil servant who allegedly bought the three-week old child.
The complainant, Samuel Okorie told Saturday Sun that,” I was shocked that before I came to the house, my wife has eloped with my four children and my six months old pregnancy she has for me.” He added that “suddenly, she appeared again after two months . She came with my four children . But I didn’t see the pregnancy again and there was no baby. I was not happy and reported the case to Orlu police station.”
Okorie explained that, “ It was when my wife was arrested by the police that she confessed to have sold a-three week old baby for N100,000 to a woman in Ihiala in Anambra State. Thank God that the police recovered the baby.”
“I didn’t quarrel or have any misunderstanding with her. We were living together in peace. I was surprised that my wife left the house suddenly “, he added. In her confessions on why she sold her baby, Njideka said “ It was the work of the devil. I have never had any misunderstanding with my husband . I just left suddenly and I went to deliver the baby and later sold it for N100,000. I delivered the baby and sold it after three weeks.
“I came back to my husband’s house and with his four children and he asked me about the pregnancy but I didn’t say anything. He later went to report the matter to the police and I was arrested. It was then that I confessed that I sold the child for N100,000. The police followed me to my father’s house and they recovered N78,000 out of the N100,000 I received from the sale of the child.”
In her own explanation, Agatha Okoronkwo stated that “ It was when she (Njideka) contacted me and I needed a child. I work at the Red Cross Organization. I bought the child for N100,000. I needed a baby and bought the three-week old baby from her in Owerri..”
The state police commissioner said his command had recovered the baby and handed her over to a rehabilitation home. He said the suspects will soon be charged to court after thorough investigation.
FG UNDER PRESSURE TO LEGALISE SAME SEX MARRIAGE
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru, stated this in Abuja on Friday at an interactive session with the diplomatic corps, even as he accused the international community of hypocrisy.
He insisted that Nigeria would not sign the Gay Rights bill or abolish the death penalty without reviewing the constitution.
The minister said that Nigeria does not impose its culture on other countries and as such it was wrong for anyone to attempt to impose a foreign culture on the nation. He said, “This thing must be understood because we have been under pressure about this issue of Gay Rights. It is not part of our own culture, you need to understand that. It needs to evolve. Let us get to that stage of understanding that two men can marry, then we will get to the bridge and cross it. But please let foreign diplomats educate their various governments that you cannot come overnight and impose values that are not part of our tradition on us. Don’t impose it on us that we must allow it in our constitution. If we are talking about democracy, democracy is about free choice, free association you don’t force values on others.
“For those who have Gay Rights, even when I look at the population of those countries, those opposing are high in number. In some countries, the churches are against it, why put pressure on Nigeria and other African countries that we must put it (in our laws). Respect for human rights of a minute minority cannot be at the expense of the larger societal values, well-being and orientation of the people. Even laws are rooted in culture which must be upheld for the good of the society. I therefore appeal to the international community to show a greater understanding of the culture and traditions of our people.
“We don’t tell other countries how to live their lives. We don’t impose values on any country. Other countries too should not come and impose their own values on us. We don’t oppose any country that has put in its constitution the Gay Rights to allow two men or two women to marry themselves. But for Nigeria and a number of other African countries; it is not part of our culture yet.’’
He said it was hypocrisy for the United States to be championing Gay Rights and while criminalising polygamy which is part of Africa’s culture and tradition.
“At times you see hypocrisy in some of these things. I must be frank. If we talk about human rights, how do we apply them? It seems they are being applied to favour some certain groups and not of wider application. There is hypocrisy in this issue of Gay Rights and polygamy,” he added.
Also at the meeting, the minister said the Federal Government had barred foreign ambassadors and diplomats representing their countries in Nigeria from commenting on political issues in the country.
The minister said the action constituted an undue interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
He explained that the meeting was necessary to maintain the excellent relationship between Nigeria and the international community, and to remove any potential irritant or misunderstanding in their interactions.
He said the government was aware of the activities of some embassies that had been funding human rights groups’ activities in the country.
He said, “We know in Nigeria we have some of the strongest human rights groups. We also know that foreign missions have been freely supporting them with funding. It is okay. We have no objection.
“But we object when ambassadors conduct activities that are incompatible with their status as diplomats. If ambassadors want to join the human rights groups, they may as well resign to join them, but they cannot use the platform of being a diplomatic agent to interfere in our domestic activities. The Vienna convention states clearly the activities that are incompatible with your functions as an envoy.
“I will want ambassadors to please confine themselves to their traditional duties. If you feel strongly about any issue, come to the foreign ministry, I will receive you. When there are things you want to take up with the government, come to the ministry. Even if you come as a regional body, I will receive you. But for you to go to the media and start talking is incompatible with the status of your office.”
Ashiru lamented that oil theft in the Gulf of Guinea had remained a major challenge facing the country.
He warned that government would not release any foreign ship or crew member caught with stolen oil in the Gulf of Guinea because huge revenues had been lost to the activities of the criminals.
He said the Federal Government had raised a high-level committee headed by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke (SAN), to tackle the challenge.
“The Nigerian Navy and the NIMASA have been directed to take firm measures against any ship caught engaging in unwholesome activities, including oil theft, in Nigeria’s territorial waters.
“This is serving as a warning that henceforth, I will not be willing to grant audience to people coming to plead for the release of their ships or crew members caught in illegal activities,” he said.
On the efforts to dislodge terrorists in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states, Ashiru said the security forces had continued to operate under the rules of engagement, with full respect for the human rights of the people.
SHOCKING: Husband Stabs Wife to Death For Bearing Female Children

The deceased, 46, simply identified as Mama Feyi, was heavily pregnant when she was allegedly stabbed to death by the husband during an early morning dispute.
It was gathered that the alleged murderer who hails from Abusoro area in Akure, Ondo State, has since been arrested and is presently being detained at the Ala divisional police station.
Eye witness accounts say the suspect has been having a running battle with his deceased wife for over two years shortly after the woman gave birth to their fourth daughter.
Sources say trouble began a month ago before the brutal murder when the husband complained aloud that his deceased wife is incapable of bearing him a male child and the incident led to a fierce altercation between the couple.
Shocked neighbours expressed disbelief at the death of mama Feyi when one of their next door neighbour, Mr. Isijola, said he was awakened by loud arguments coming from their room very early in the morning. “I ignored them as it is a norm for them to always argue and have altercations. I decided to ignore them at first but when the noise was getting unbearable, I stepped into their room only to find the lifeless body of the woman on the floor, lying in the pool of her blood.
"I saw the man holding a knife and he threatened to stab me if I don’t leave. It was when I discovered that he may abscond that I alerted the police who immediately came to arrest him.”
Narrating the incident, daughter of the deceased, Feyisara, said, “It all started on Sunday after my mummy had cooked rice. She asked me to go and collect money from my father to prepare stew and on getting to him, he started shouting. But he later gave me N500 which my mum refused to collect.
"They both argued and had a fight. I had to make a distress call to neighbours to settle the dispute”.
Obaobona Slams Wenger

Asked what happened to his Arsenal deal, the Super Eagles defender angrily thundered: “I don’t think anything happened because it is high time some of these clubs started respecting this country. Nigeria is a very big football playing country. “I continue to wonder why Barcelona should sign Nermay for £50 million from a Brazilian club even before Brazil won the Confederations Cup, only for Arsenal management to tell me, who participated in the team that won the Africa Cup of Nations to come for trial.
I think I should be above such request,” he quipped angrily. Speaking on his plans to take his career outside the shore of Nigeria, the Sunshine Stars FC skipper said: “I have no doubt that I will get a good deal in Europe very soon.
But I’m not going to be in a haste to accept any deal because I want to leave the country. “When we finished AFCON, there was no transfer window then and it would be wrong to think that since I did well in South Africa, I should desperately accept any offer from obscure countries like Iran or Iraq, Tahiti or Cote d’Ivoire in the name of playing professional football. I believe our league here is better than the ones in those countries,” he said.
On how urgent the deal would materialise and whether he would still be part of the CHAN tournament early next year, Obabona philosophically responded: “I hope you are not suggesting that I should reject good offers because I want to participate in CHAN.” If I leave we have players to step into my shoes but if I did not, I will be part of the tournament.”

SHOCKING REVELATIONS: Pastor TB Joshua Is The Man Behind Al-Mustapha's Release - You Won't Believe His Reasons

Controversial Lagos sect leader, Pastor TB Joshua, who has Mr. Jonathan eating out of his hands, has been identified as the person who told the Nigeria leader that his political fortune rests with setting Al Mustapha free.
In addition, Mr. Joshua has also told Mr. Jonathan if he is to win in 2015, he needs to bring back to Nigeria James Ibori, the former Delta State governor who is currently serving a 13-year jail term in the United Kingdom.
After Mr. Joshua's spiritual “forecast” was told to Mr. Jonathan, SaharaReporters sources say he instructed the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke to take care of the judges involved in the case, giving him a war chest of $2 million.
But a judge, Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, a Northern Muslim, who was earlier contacted to do the dirty job, refused to accept the bribe and removed himself from consideration of the plan.
Another judge, Amina Augie, was then drafted to handle the Al-Mustapha’s acquittal. Ms. Augie, formerly known as Anna Graham, who is originally from Anambra State and fourth wife of late Senator Adamu Augie of Kebbi State, took the case and assembled some lawyers to help with drafting the judgement.
It is also alleged that she got help from some members of the Nigerian human rights community in drafting the judgement, which blamed the prosecutors in Mr. Mustapha's case for doing a “shoddy” job. Among other ridiculous arguments, Ms. Augie’s claimed in the judgement that the prosecution couldn't provide the bullet that killed Mrs. Kudirat Abiola in 1996.
In an interview with SaharaTV yesterday, Hafsat Abiola, the daughter of the slain Nigerian democracy heroine, told Omoyele Sowore of SaharaTV that the Court of Appeal has yet to provide the lead judgement read by Justice Rita Pemu in the Al-Mustapha case to the office of the Attorney General of Lagos State.
Strangely however, Ms. Augie's concurring judgement was already made available to subscribers of an exclusive Nigerian lawyer's listserve, "Rule of Law" Nigeria. The judgement was provided to the listserv by the chairperson of the Nigerian Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, who had initially derided a Saharareporters’ investigative report, which revealed that a deal was in the works to set Al Mustapha free of the murder charges two weeks before the judgement was hatched.
With reference to bringing Ibori home, it is unclear how Jonathan will go about it. The National Assembly has approved a prisoner swap law with the United Kingdom but it is yet to be seen how Ibori might benefit from that. Between his all-but-buried war against corruption and his deep desire to retain the presidency, there may be no limit to what policies he may come up with.
A source at the Presidency in Abuja told Saharareporters that Mr. Joshua has so much control over Mr. Jonathan right now that whatever he requests is granted without delay because the president believes that the pastor holds the spiritual key to his electoral success in 2015.
President Jonathan and his wife, Patience have made several nocturnal visits to the pastor since becoming president. Al Mustapha also visited the Pastor soon after he was released from prison before heading to Kano to meet with family and friends.
2015: Northern Elders, Youths Endorse Jonathan

The elders and youths came under the aegis of three groups, Northern Elders Forum, North/South New Nigeria Forum, Fresh Air Continuity Group of North West and Northern PDP Youth.
The groups – led by a former Education Minister under the late Gen Abacha’s regime and former Presidential Aspirant of All Nigerian Peoples Party, ANPP, Dr Dauda Birmah, on a solidarity visit to the PDP national Chairman of PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur – declared that the North would ever be grateful to the PDP led Government of President Jonathan for creating a conducive atmosphere that made the release of the former Chief Security Adviser to late Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha possible after over 14 years of incarceration.
They however hailed Jonathan over the release from prison of Major Hamza al-Mustapha, just as they promised to get most voters in the north, especially North West to support and vote for him.
Dauda Birma, said “Goodluck Jonathan’s leadership has been rated as the best administration so far. With what Jonathan has done in Maiduguri, I can affirm that the city is now safer than most parts of the country”.
According to him, Major Mustapha’s release would not have been possible by the ordinary fiat of the court if not for the underground work of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and the consent of the executive of the President Jonathan led administration, adding that the Groups decided to come out openly to appreciate the exemplary leadership qualities of the President Jonathan since assumption of office which had been unprecedented in the anal of Nigeria.
He said they were also at the PDP National Secretariat to correct insinuations that the People of the North especially the North- West Zone were against his Presidential ambition come 2015, adding that the release of Major Al-Mustapha had further fuelled the supports of the North for the re election of President Jonathan come 2015.
The leaders of the three Groups, Hajia Nana Abdulkadri, Mallam Mohammed Omeri and Ibrahim Mohammed in their remarks expressed their appreciation for the release of the former CSO and acknowledged the roles of the leadership of the Party and the President and as well dismissed the wrong notion that the North in general was against the Presidential ambition of Dr Jonathan come 2015.
Responding, Alhaji Tukur said that it was a thing of joy for him for three different Groups to come at the same time to appreciate openly the achievements of the PDP led administration of President Jonathan at this point in time when wrong impressions were being created that all was not well in the country.
According to him, “to me, this is democracy in action, people will agree with you, people will also disagree with you, we can not see things the same way at all times, when we see good things we should celebrate like these groups are doing now, celebrate good things, celebrate democracy, celebrate justice, don’t be intimidated by others, this is your country, hold it firmly”.

Commercial Motorcycle Rider in Court for Raping Passanger

The prosecutor, Mrs. Chinyere Ugwuja, alleged that the accused raped the victim when he was conveying her to her village at Amaeke Ngwo in Udi Local Government Area on May 25, 2011.
Ugwuja said an eyewitness alerted the police who rushed to the scene around 10 p.m. on the fateful day and rescued the victim.
She said the accused picked the victim from 9th Mile on her way from Onitsha, but rather than take her to her destination, he diverted to a bush and raped her.
He urged the court to evolve the necessary constitutional provisions in sanctioning him as he had no case to defend in this situation.
The counsel to the accused, Mr. Emeka Uzoegbu, said his client was not a rapist but a commercial motorcyclist who was working for his daily bread.
“He was just a mere motorcycle rider popularly called Okada operating along the 9th Mile axis. It is true that he conveyed the victim to her uncle’s place off Ama Brewery, but he did not rape her,” he said.
Uzoegbu said there was a disagreement between them over the fare which resulted to a fight, adding that his client did not rape her as claimed.
“On his way coming back to the bus-stop at 9th Mile, he stopped at a nearby bush to answer the call of nature when the police arrested him and accused him of rape,” he said.
Mr. Justice Afam Nwobodo adjourned the case till 2nd of October for further hearing. (NAN)

ASUU May Call Off Strike Next Thursday
Governor of Benue State, Mr Gabriel Suswam who dropped this hint Friday said ASUU and the Federal Government had reached agreements on all the contentious issues that led to the industrial action except two.
Suswam who was appointed as Chairman of the Needs Assessment Implementation Committee of the Federal Government said after next Thursday’s deliberations between his Committee and the various agencies of government funding tertiary education, all the contentious issues would likely be resolved.
Speaking to news men in Abuja after attending a meeting between the Federal Government’s delegation and ASUU, Suswam said that agreements had been reached by both parties on all issues except two. Said he: “We reached agreements on all issues except two. These two issues are those of earned allowances of lecturers and intervention for the federal universities. These are the only issues that are still outstanding.”
The Benue Governor further said he believed that by next week after his Committee would have arrived at an agreement on all the issues, ASUU would call off the strike. He continued: ”The SGF would meet with the leadership of ASUU on the issue of earned allowances by next Monday.
Then my committee which is dealing with the issue of the needs assessment of the universities would meet again next Thursday and take another look at all the infrastructural deficits which the federal universities are facing. If you go to our universities, you would agree that they are facing infrastructural deficits and that is why my committee would meet with all the funding agencies next Thursday for the purpose of prioritizing all the projects that need to be executed.
We are going to invite all the agencies that are involved in the funding of the universities including the Central Bank of Nigeria.” Suswam further stated that the issues on agreements have been reached include: those of retirement age for university lecturers- which has now been increased from 65 to 70 years; the constitution of the governing councils of the universities which has already been done by the Government; the setting up of a pension administrator and the issue of persuading companies operating in the country to set up research centers in the universities.
Said he: “As far as I am concerned, if the issues concerning intervention and earned allowances are resolved next week, then the strike could be called off” Among those who attended the meeting were Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Minister of Labour, Hon. Emeka Wogu, Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayatu Rufai and President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Nasir Fagge.
Now That Pupils Are On Holiday, Here's How To Keep Them Busy!

Now That Pupils Are On Holiday, Here's How To Keep Them Busy! |
However, the holiday season comes with its challenges, especially for working class parents who live in urban centres. Many parents in this category will now be battling with the challenge of how to monitor their children while they are away at work. Some would be thinking of how to gainfully engage them.
For some smart Nigerians, including school owners, it’s time to make some money by organising summer school and skills acquisition schemes. These, however, come at a cost which the parents must bear.
Experts say in spite of this, parents must ensure that their children are engaged meaningfully. Otherwise, they could use the period for destructive venture because, as the saying goes, the devil finds work for the idle hand.
In order to keep them busy during this period, many parents have fashioned out positive ways to keep their children out of mischief and trouble while the holiday lasts.
Educationists and parents say pupils must first be taught how to maintain a balance between recreation and academic activities.
An educationist and principal, Global International College, Lekki, Lagos, Mrs. Bisi Olayiwola, says many pupils tend to see the period as a time to relax after a hectic academic exercise, but she warns that such pupils must realise that being on holiday is not tantamount to completing one’s academic programmes.
She advocates a balancing act between recreational pursuits and academic exercise. According to her, pupils can also visit their cousins, aunties, grandparents and even recreational and historical spots.
She says, “This long holiday is normally seen by many pupils as a time for relaxation. They believe they have had a stressful time in the school, reading and sitting for their promotional examinations. Also, it is not out of place for them to relax and visit some places of interest like the zoo, amusement parks, the National Theatre and Badagry to see the first storey building in Nigeria or even visit grandparents, aunties, and cousins.
However, “They must not forget that there are summer programmes, which focus on either academic or skill acquisition programmes or both. Pupils should keep busy by attending the remedial ones to work on those subjects where they are having challenges, while those who want to acquire skills in bead making, barbing, hair dressing and fashion design, among others, can also do so.”
Many parents have already mapped out how to keep their children engaged along this line of thought.
A civil servant, Mrs. Bola Ajao, says her three children are already set for summer camp from next week.
But she explains that her second child, a girl, will be updating her skills in hairdressing, in addition to attending the summer camp.
She states, “My daughter, who’s the second child, apart from attending the summer camp, will also update her skills in hairdressing during this long holiday. She’s already in SS2, and I have enrolled her for the hair dressing session in a beauty salon.
“Definitely, I need to keep them engaged since I cannot be carrying them to the office every day.”
Also, Mrs. Christie Ajieh says she has a mixed bag of leisure and study for her two children, who are both in primary school. She explains that she will be taking them to Port Harcourt to spend some time with their father, who works in the Garden City.
Her children, she says, will also attend a summer camp, not in their school but elsewhere so that they can make new friends and have new experience.
She adds, “It is good to give them a new experience and exposure, and that is why I will enroll them for summer camp in a different school. Besides, I have discovered that my daughter loves reading; I am going to encourage her by buying her more story books to engage her.
“Then, for her younger brother, I need to moderate his love for cartoons. He loves the cartoon series a lot. I need to regulate this during this period and make him concentrate more on his studies, though he is still in unior class.”
2 Cousins Die Committing Incest In Imo

2 Cousins Die Committing Incest In Imo |
Sources in the community told 247ureports.com that the late Mathias, 45, had returned home from his Onitsha base to attend the priestly ordination of his kinsman, Rev. Fr. Anayochukwu Onuoha, held at Mater Dei Cathedral, Umuahia, Abia State last Saturday June 20 2013.
It was learnt that all through the ordination ceremony, Mathias and the late Angela were literally tied to each other, with the latter taking the front seat of the former’s jeep.
Their entanglement was said to have continued the next day, Sunday, during the ceremony marking the first Holy and Thanksgiving Mass at Holy Ghost Parish, Umuevu Okirika-Nweke.
The deceased were also seen together at the ordination reception and later at the compound of the new priest where they were dancing to the music coming from Mathias’ car’s loudspeakers, while he occasionally was shooting gunshots from his pump action gun as Angela fed him with cartridges.
Interestingly, the deceased cousins were among family members who received prayers from the new priest, who earlier enjoined the people of the community to shun hypocrisy, atrocities and other iniquities if they must avoid God’s anger.
The late Mathias who was said to have been married for 13 years without any child, however, returned home with a young girl as his fiancée who he left in the house.
It was gathered that while the fiancée was home watching videos and waiting for Mathias, he only returned around 11pm and told her to go to sleep while he collected torchlight to see Angela off to her house.
But that was not to be as the duo diverted to Mathias’ semi-completed building.
Worried by her daughter’s non arrival to the house, Angela’s mother called her phone line but Mathias was said to have answered the phone telling the woman that her daughter was with him.
Also, alarmed by Mathias’ absence in the house up till Monday morning, his fiancée began to look for him within the house and was shocked to have stumbled on the naked but entangled bodies locked in death.
She immediately alerted Mathias’ family members who could not believe their eyes. Also, Angela’s mother who was returning from Morning mass was simply speechless at the sight of the deceased.
