Scholarships for International First-Year Students, 2011-12, The University of Iowa, USA

The University of Iowa offers several scholarships to outstanding international first-year students. Financial assistance in the form of grants, loans, or need-based aid is not available for international students.

UI Presidential Scholarship
Requires a minimum ACT composite score of 30 (or a minimum combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1330) AND a minimum cumulative high school grade-point average (GPA) of 3.80 on a 4.00 scale.

Old Gold Scholarship
For up to 350 applicants in the University of Iowa Presidential Scholarship competition.

Dean Gerhard Loewenberg Scholarship
For the top-ranking alternate in the Presidential Scholarship competition who is majoring in College of Liberal Arts and Sciences programs only (see Presidential Scholarship details higher on this page).

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Excellence Award
For selected Old Gold Scholars with majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (see Old Gold Scholarship details higher on this page).

  • Value: $1,000 - $2,000
  • One-time award for first-year students only
  • Up to five awards per year

University of Iowa National Scholars Award
For entering nonresident and international first-year students who have a Regent Admission Index score of 290 or above. If your high school does not rank, an ACT composite score of 26 (or a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1170) or above AND a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.60 on a 4.00 scale are required.

  • Value: $16,960 ($4,240 a year for up to four years)
    • If tuition increases, the scholarship will increase by the same percent.

Iowa Heritage Award
For entering nonresident students who have a parent, stepparent, legal guardian, or grandparent who graduated from The University of Iowa with a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree.

Individual departments and colleges also award scholarships
to first-year students. A few examples are listed below.

Engineering Excellence Scholarship
For engineering majors who have a 3.70 GPA (on a 4.00 scale) OR an ACT composite score of 28 (a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1250) or above.

Tippie Scholars Program Scholarship
For students who qualify for Direct Admission to the Tippie College of Business and who apply to the Tippie Scholars Program. Additional requirements are specified below.

  • Value: $1,500
    • The award may be renewed for the sophomore year provided eligibility requirements are met.
  • Admission to the Tippie Scholars Program is highly competitive and based on academic merit and an essay.
  • The Tippie Scholars Program Scholarship Application is due February 1, 2011, for students applying for Fall 2011.
