
In North America, there has been a multi-disciplinary research focus on fraternities. Fraternities are often referred to as Greek Houses because they identify themselves with Greek alphabet example alpha, kappa, beta, etc.
Each group owns and occupies a place outside the university.

They are not a part of the University and the University claims no physical or moral responsibilities for them. Fraternities are open, advertise their members and activities and so on. The town police supervise their activities as any part of the population.Perceived Features of campus Fraternity
However, in spite of the public relations image as philanthropic social clubs for young people, the fraternities are perceived toa. Provide a subculture which insulates members from ongoing campus climate;
b. Promote conformity
c. Produce members who have less concern for social injustice;
d. Assist members who are often weak academically and
e. Purvey certain highly masculine characteristics: homophobic views, preoccupation with loyalty, use of alcohol and substance, physical force as weapon in social relations, obsession with competition, superiority and dominance. It is postulated that all these traits encourage social and sexual violence against women.
