The essay scholarship of Voyage to Discovery Essay Contest is open to students in high school and middle school and is offered through a collaboration between the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and the NOAA Office of Marine Sanctuaries. Scholarships will be awarded for both categories–the HS student winner will win $1,500. The middle school student winner will receive $500.Description
The purpose of this scholarship program is two-fold “to highlight African-American contributions to the country’s maritime heritage while fostering increased participation in marine careers and ocean conservation.” Through researching this topic/writing an essay, students will have a better grasp of the contributions of African-Americans in the maritime field.

Eligibility
Students who are in high school should write an essay no longer than three pages (double-spaced). Middle school students should keep their essays to no more than two pages (also double-spaced).
Application Procedure
Essays should be written “on an African-American individual or group who made a significant contribution to U.S. maritime history.”
