2013 Voyage to Discovery Essay Scholarship, USA

Voyage to Discovery Essay ScholarshipThe essay scholarship of Voyage to Discovery Essay Contest is open to students in high school and middle school and is offered through a collaboration between the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and the NOAA Office of Marine Sanctuaries. Scholarships will be awarded for both categories–the HS student winner will win $1,500.  The middle school student winner will receive $500.

Description
The purpose of this scholarship program is two-fold “to highlight African-American contributions to the country’s maritime heritage while fostering increased participation in marine careers and ocean conservation.”  Through researching this topic/writing an essay, students will have a better grasp of the contributions of African-Americans in the maritime field.

Benefits: Scholarships will be awarded for both categories–the HS student winner will win $1,500.  The middle school student winner will receive $500.

Eligibility
Students who are in high school should write an essay no longer than three pages (double-spaced).  Middle school students should keep their essays to no more than two pages (also double-spaced).

Application Procedure

Essays should be written “on an African-American individual or group who made a significant contribution to U.S. maritime history.”
